Medicine: a compound or preparation used for the treatment or prevention of disease, especially a drug or drugs taken by mouth.
Today required a lot of medicine. All-day curriculum meetings will do that to you.
I am usually the baker for these all-day meetings. There's just something about being stuck in a room, for upwards of eight hours, that just requires something out of the norm, something sweet, to push us through. Especially after a lunch that often leaves us feeling full, sleepy, and unmotivated.
So I pull from my vast collection of recipes or my Pinterest recipe board and whip something up the night before. Oreo Truffles. Raspberry Bars. Salted Caramel Brownie Bites. Mmmmm.
Friday afternoon, I called to my colleagues as they left that meeting.
"Check your e-mail this weekend! I'll send a few ideas out for treats, let me know which you'd like!"
All Friday afternoon, my brain was reviewing the possibilities.
"I haven't done a traditional cookie yet, and hubby would LOVE me to make those cinnamon ones again."
"I also haven't made cupcakes, and those are fun and easy to do."
"I think I'll save the Spring sugar cookies for closer to the first day of Spring."
So when I woke up Saturday (at NOON!), I had the first inkling that I wouldn't be baking this weekend. But I figured - this is just a cold! I'll sleep a lot tonight, and I'll be fine by tomorrow. I'll do something easy.
But waking up Sunday morning, I knew it probably wasn't going to happen. I did some dishes, but then quickly reverted right back to the couch. TV and naps were all that were on my horizon.
Early Sunday evening, I sent a message to my team, titled: No Treats :-(
I told them that I was feeling poorly. That baking was out of the question (no need to spread my germs to anyone). That I was sorry we wouldn't have a sugar fix in the afternoon.
A few e-mailed back, telling me to feel better.
When I arrived this morning, I felt like I wasn't fully contributing to the day. That it was just going to drag. Because, in addition to not bringing anything to snack on in the afternoon, I still felt extremely lousy, and this was hard, intense work.
But, because I am extremely lucky and work on an amazing team, one of my colleagues came to the rescue.
"It isn't a baked good like Ashley makes, but it's sugar!" she announced, walking in with a tin of Kit Kats and York Peppermint Patties.
It was just the right medicine to prevent brain melt-down this afternoon.

| Also, because my colleague is amazing, she also provided me with some "real" medicine, some Emergen-C, and made me drink it. It is gross, but I drank it! |

What a sweet slice! I love that your colleagues came to the rescue (and I am also in favor of treats at all day meetings!!!!)
ReplyDeleteThat's what a team will do for you. One member is not feeling up to par, someone else steps up to the plate and delivers the sweets. I hope you are feeling better by now and maybe it's due to that nasty Emergen-C.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you have an amazing team. Hope you feel well soon!
