They can't make you go to school on a Sunday, can they?
Several people have asked me that question when I mentioned that I was heading into school this afternoon. We are going through a self-study, and the committee is here to observe the school this week. They arrived today, and there was a welcoming "meet-and-greet" this afternoon.
No one is evaluating whether I was there or not. There won't be a commendation letter or a write-up about whether I showed up or not. Truly, in the big picture, it didn't matter whether I showed up or not. And with a raging chest cold, I considered not going. Staying home. In my PJs.
But my colleagues know I was there. My principals know I was there. The parents and students know I was there. And I know I was there.
No, they can't make you go to school on a Sunday. But when you are dedicated to your craft, dedicated to the people you work with, and dedicated to improvement, you show up.

You are very dedicated. Parents and community members do not think about all the extra things we do to make our schools, classrooms, students and selves stronger. Thank you for your commitment to your school. Hope you feel better soon!
ReplyDeleteThat's the key - when you are dedicated to your craft. It's hard because we also have to have balance and a life outside of work. They did notice you were there.
ReplyDeleteYour own sense of responsibility sent you to school on this day. That's what we do. We do our job with heart. I hope your cold is subsiding and you are feeling better.
ReplyDeleteYour dedication shines through and I think most importantly you showed up because you wanted to be there.
ReplyDeleteLove! You are so right! When we commit to being a teacher, we commit to doing all the great things that go along with it. If that means going to school on Sunday, that's what we do! :) What a great job showing your students how to be dedicated. :)
