Slices

Our days are often made up of many different slices. Recently, I read Michelle's post titled "Today, I", where she wrote about small slices from across her day, each of which could turn into a larger slice. I was inspired to write a post like that, but wasn't sure when the day would come. Well, today's the day!

Fourteen Slices from my Day

  1. Actually woke up to my alarm without hitting snooze, which I haven't done allllll week long - this felt very refreshing, and I hope it's the start of a routine.
  2. Walked into the kitchen this morning to find a portion of the floor covered in small black ants - EW! EEK! I texted my husband to let him know.
  3. Heard the noise signaling a text on my phone, and hoped my mom would wait a few minutes - but she was saying she was running late and I had a few more minutes to get ready
  4. Tried to stop at the bank, but we stopped at not one, not two, but THREE bank locations that Google Maps told us were open but were, indeed, closed - but not closed for time, closed like the building isn't even there anymore
  5. Talked to my mom about a kind of big struggle in my life right now and was glad to be wearing sunglasses so she wouldn't see me tearing up; while I'm glad she knows, it makes it more real and more urgent.
  6. Visited with my cousin and learned some things about my family and its history that I never knew, including a new name that I hadn't heard before, Vera.
  7. Held in my hands many different things that my great-aunt, whose house is now being cleaned out after her passing, had created and collected over her lifetime.
  8. Watched my almost 91 year old grandfather eat lunch, which is a daily ritual that is done in very precise order: first chips, then sandwich, then banana, then tea. All of this takes exactly 30 minutes.
  9. Left with mom to go to lunch, and had to take at least 3 detours to avoid traffic and, upon arriving at the Five Guys we wanted to go to, found that our pattern from the morning was following us around - the restaurant was closed for renovation.
  10. Ran into a friend at the deli where we were having lunch and caught up with her about the fundraiser that we run every year, and our feelings about the choice to make this year the last year for both of us.
  11. Finally got home to take a breath (no more ants, thank goodness!) when my hubby got home and out the door we went again!
  12. Marveled at the abilities and risk taking behavior of my friend's eight month old son, who tumbled and snuggled and climbed and drooled all over me while we celebrated St. Patrick's Day.
  13. Laughed the hardest I've laughed in a long time while playing Mad Gab and Heads Up with our friends, especially when the game went to "acting out" answers for people to guess and the category was animals.
  14. Ended my day with my new ritual, writing my slice and setting it to post the next day; I love laying in bed, listening to my husband's not-so-soft breathing, feeling the pressure one cat puts on my legs while she sleeps and I write.

  3. Is there any wonder we are so tired at night - with all that happens, all that thinking power we expend, in just one day! I am impressed by your powers of observation.

  5. I like this structure! It's almost like flash fiction. How much can you put in a sentence that inspires curiosity and emotion. Nice!

  6. It sounds like you had a very busy day. That is a great structure, you accomplished a lot today. If I wrote one of those I think I would only have 2-3 things on it!

  7. Whew! What a day, right? It's amazing when you look back and break each little moment down in a day. No wonder we are exhausted at the end of the day! Sorry about all the detours and closed for renovations and missing buildings! Thankfully you had a lot of patience today!

  8. One of my favorite things about the SOL challenge is finding new structures to try. This community is so creative!
